PVC lamination is the process of wrapping a paperboard stationery folder in a thin PVC film and heat-sealing the edges. Done correctly, the film does not wrinkle at the corners, the print underneath stays crisp, and the folder survives five or more years of daily handling. 1. What PVC lamination is, in plain terms

A PVC-laminated folder is a paperboard folder wrapped in a thin layer of polyvinyl chloride film, typically 0.05 to 0.10 mm thick. The film is bonded to the paperboard with heat and pressure in a lamination press. The result is a folder that looks and feels like plastic, prints cleanly on the surface, and resists scuffing, moisture and tearing better than an uncovered paperboard folder.

PVC lamination is not the same as a PP folder. PP folders are made from polypropylene plastic throughout; PVC-laminated folders are paperboard with a PVC wrapper. The materials are different, the production process is different, and the result is different in weight, hand-feel, and recyclability.

2. The lamination process, step by step

On a production line, PVC lamination has four steps. Each step is a quality checkpoint:

  • Print. The paperboard sheet is printed with the folder artwork in offset or digital print. This step sets the visual quality. A blurry print or a misregistered colour will be visible under the PVC film because the film magnifies surface detail.
  • Cut. The printed sheet is cut to the folder size on a die-cutter. The cut edges are the foundation for the corner seal in step four.
  • Wrap. The PVC film is laid over the paperboard and tacked in place with a low-temperature pre-seal. The folder is not yet pressed — this step just holds the film in position.
  • Heat-seal. The wrapped folder goes into a lamination press where heat (typically 140 to 160 degrees Celsius) and pressure bond the PVC film to the paperboard and seal the edges. The press time, the temperature, and the pressure profile are the three variables that determine whether the lamination comes out clean.

A press that runs too hot burns the paperboard; a press that runs too cold leaves the film unbonded. A press that runs too fast leaves air bubbles; a press that runs too slow deforms the paperboard. Getting the four variables right on a consistent basis is the difference between a premium lamination and a cheap one.

2. The four defects that tell you lamination was done badly

Four visible defects are the warning signs of poor lamination:

  • Corner wrinkles. The film wrinkles at the corners where it folds around the paperboard edge. This is the most common defect on cheap lamination and the hardest to fix after the fact. Caused by film tension that is too high or press temperature that is too low.
  • Edge peel. The film lifts at the edges of the folder, usually along the spine or the corners. Caused by insufficient pressure in the press or by a film-to-board mismatch.
  • Air bubbles. Small bubbles under the film, usually near the centre of the folder panel. Caused by trapped air during the wrap step or by uneven pressure in the press.
  • Print shift. The artwork appears shifted or blurred under the film. Caused by the film slipping during the heat-seal step or by the paperboard expanding under heat.

On a quality-controlled line, these defects are caught at the press and reworked. On a line that prioritises throughput over quality, the defects end up in the buyer's shipment.

4. How to evaluate a supplier's lamination

Five questions tell you whether a supplier's PVC lamination is reliable:

  1. What is your corner-wrinkle rate? A well-controlled line runs under 2 percent. A line that cannot answer this question is running too fast.
  2. What film thickness do you use? 0.05 mm is standard for school and household supply. 0.08 to 0.10 mm is premium for executive and promotional folders.
  3. What is your press temperature profile? A reliable answer is a specific temperature range and a specific dwell time, not a vague "we use heat".
  4. Can I see a five-year-old sample folder? If the supplier can produce a folder that has aged well in their own archive, their lamination is consistent.
  5. What is your rework policy for visible defects? A reliable supplier inspects at the press and reworks or rejects before packing. A supplier that ships defects and waits for the buyer to complain is not reliable.

5. PVC lamination and the European market

PVC film sold into the European market must comply with REACH, the EU regulation on chemical substances. REACH restricts the use of certain plasticisers and heavy-metal additives in PVC film sold in the EU. Compliance is documented through a REACH declaration provided by the film supplier.
