The dimensions below are the spine width and the height of the open file. Box files are sized to hold the paper inside without folding the sheet.

• A4 box file: 240 mm wide by 320 mm tall (paper 210 by 297 mm). The international standard across Europe, Asia, Africa and most of South America.
• Foolscap box file (FC): 240 mm wide by 360 mm tall (paper 216 by 343 mm, or 8.5 by 13.5 inches). The standard in UK Commonwealth markets and parts of South Africa, Australia and New Zealand.
• US Letter box file: 245 mm wide by 305 mm tall (paper 8.5 by 11 inches, or 216 by 279 mm). The standard in the United States, Canada and parts of Mexico.

The Foolscap and A4 box files are both 240 mm wide. The difference is the height: FC is 360 mm tall, A4 is 320 mm tall. A Foolscap folder will not fit a standard A4 shelf but will hold an A4 sheet with a 30 mm allowance at the top.

• The paper does not fit. A US Letter sheet inside an A4 box file will fold. An A4 sheet inside a Foolscap box file will sit 30 mm too low and look unprofessional.
• The boxes do not stack. A4 boxes on a Foolscap shelf leave a 40 mm gap. Foolscap boxes on an A4 shelf will not fit. Mixed-size boxes on the same shelf look messy and reduce usable storage.
• The label does not fit. Spine labels are sized to the box file. A Foolscap spine label will hang off an A4 box file and look like a mistake.
